Zoutpans Campaign - British Forces

As the campaign is to be fictional I thought it would be a bit of fun to get ChatGPT to create a fictional order of battle along with commanders. The British force will be led by General Sir Alistair C. Wetherby KCB.

Here is the detailed order of battle of the troops under General Wetherby's command:

Army Headquarters
Commander-in-Chief

No4 Maxim Gun Detachment - Lieutenant Hamish MacDougall

Mounted Brigade

11th Royal Lancers - Colonel Charles Montgomery
Imperial Volunteer Horse - Lieutenant-Colonel Cyril A. Pembroke

Naval Brigade
Naval Brigade Landing Party - Commander William H. Ashburn RN
1st Naval Heavy Battery - Commander Edward H. Somerset RN

I also asked the AI to create a brief description of each commander and to rate them all as either below average, average, above average, or exceptional. This kind of background detail all goes to flesh out the bones of a solo campaign to make it more engaging.

  1. Well it appears ChatGPT is certainly going to expedite things for you. Any plans to involve it in the Boer decision making?
I'd forgotten just how many troops you had! I went back and checked your parade post back in January '24 and was pleasantly surprised.
It's going to be fun watching the campaign unfold.

    1. I did toy with the idea of having the AI control the Boers but think I may just stick to using a D6 and a list of options. However the good thing with a solo campaign is you can change the rules as you go along so maybe.

    2. Before you start the campaign test out the AI on some random generic battlefield or strategic situations and see what sort of stuff it comes up with. You might be surprised - and it would certainly feel more like you had an opponent.

    3. Yes I will try out a few things possibly including table terrain generation although it can be quite quirky when drawing maps!

  2. Wow, the AI newspaper is quite thorough and very detailed! It certainly adds a lot to your scenario Ian, and it retains that Victorian flavor! A great use for this technology!

    1. Thanks Brad, I’m still learning where the AI may be of use but it’s certainly good for this background stuff.

  3. Well the LIN certainly gives those despicable Boers a chance to study his tactics.
Hang on - there was no Google back then...phew!
