After the last post I couldn’t resist painting up this Jacklex marching highlander B16. As my reference I have of course used the illustration of a Gordon Highlander Private (1900) from my Blandford “Military Uniforms of the World”, the same source I used for the illustration in the previous post.
My thoughts on this project are slipping more and more towards Old School and as such I will be using this same figure to make up a full 24 figure unit at some point. I think I will probably be opting for simple plain green bases as well in a similar fashion to my Napoleonic forces.
I have kept the painting detail deliberately basic which is also in tune with the Old School theme and will enable me to build up my forces relatively quickly - once I can find some time to pick up a paint brush again that is.
He looks very fine. How many figures are you going to need for a game?
ReplyDeleteI'm intending to keep this small scale with a brigade of British (3 x 24 figure battalions) and 60 or so Boers plus a few guns. This seems achievable even at my ponderously slow painting output.
DeleteVery nice. There isn't too much green in South Africa so you may want to consider a sand coloured base. Are you going to do any mounted infantry? The Boers had more artillery than the British early in the war.
ReplyDeleteThats interesting what you say about using sand colour for the base. This was my initial thought however after searching for images of the veldt it seemed that this was quite green? Perhaps this is only the case in the winter? I will probably have a limited number of cavalry but as this is a small scale project I won't be having mounted infantry. I do have a couple of Pom-poems for the Boers!
DeleteCool, nice job...and I love this uniform!
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil!
DeleteYour initial idea on basing was better! The veldt is quite brown in summer. Natal is more green. Generally the convention on Boer War is brown and that has the added advantage of being suitable for Afghanistan and for Sudan. Besides, your initial Boer basing looks great!
ReplyDeleteOn reflection I've already decided to stick with the original basing scheme - I hardly have any time for painting stuff so fiddling around rebasing is a bit of a luxury!
