Coldstream Guards

The 1st battalion Coldstream Guards formed part of 1st Guards brigade under major General Colvile and also contained the 2nd Coldstream, 3rd Grenadier Guards and 1st Scots Guards. The 1st battalion Coldstreams were engaged at Belmont, Modder River and Magesfontein where they suffered heavy casualties.

Although I have called these the Coldstream Guards they will be able to stand in for any Guards units on the wargame table. These wonderful figures by Raventhorpe Miniatures are on the chunky side of 20mm and certainly dwarf my Jacklex figures but I guess Guardsmen were suppose to be tall and I really wanted to use them.

27 Raventhorpe figures painted for me by the talented Matt Golding.

  2. I came here from your Hinton Hunt blog - how do you get so much done? My projects drag on interminably making little or no progress and often end up abandoned.
I have toyed with the idea of doing the Boer War as a 'Pony Wars' variant but never actually took the plunge. The appeal was that with the Boers out-shooting 'er Majesty's men you don't need the vast numbers of opponents required if you're up against Zulus or Fuzzy-Wuzzies. It also keeps the homestead objectives in the game, albeit the players are not so much saving the homesteaders from the natives as burning their farms and interning them to deny sustenance to the Kommandos.

    1. I don't actually manage to get all that much done, a lot of the figures on this blog have actually been painted by Matt and Ross and then based by me! The key to this project is to keep it small, I'm only looking at about 100 or so figures per side. Also painting Colonial stuff is ten times faster than Napoleonics and gives me a bit of a break from all that colourful detail.

  3. Tried to 'do' the Boer war using 15mm Peter Laing years ago and struggled to find rules to play it - Newbury Colonial Rules ( the horror !!!)

    1. Hi Roy - still chipping away at this project but progress is actually quite slow. British battalions are 24 figures plus three officers, Boer Commando's are 12 figures plus one Commandant.
